Everything in a tale..

Recently I have been making poems to accompany a few of my pen sketches. Its been a lot of fun and to be honest I'm pleasantly surprised how quickly they slipped off my tongue.

"Come and greet us,

stay for a while,

says one with a candle,

the other with a smile,

so happy to see you,

don't be afraid,

our last guest left us

look here, feel her braids."

"Don't look out, they said,
just wait for one more day !
But she waited long enough,
and it was now her time to pay.
She opened up the window,
placed her hands upon the ledge,
a force of wind took over,
and severed her sweet head."

"Miss M Nightingale,

governess of Hill House,
lurks behind the staircase,
hands restless as a mouse,
listening to the chatter,
of children unaware,
she'll snatch them by their ear lobs,
then drag them up the stairs."

Naked Aye Art Collective, Edinburgh

'SHAPES THAT SHIFT DESIRE - MULTI ARTS EXHIBITION'
Naked Aye collective  - Edinburgh Palette, 151 London Road, Edinburgh.

I am so delighted to be part of the Edinburgh Arts Collective - Naked Aye, multi arts exhibition.
Last Saturday I was at the opening and was overwhelmed with the amount of interest and admiration for the work on show. The Naked Arts collective team are helpful, friendly and so passionate about show, its message and every artist they promote. Thank you Naked Aye.

Another drawing to the collection. This one is roughly A3 in size and I'm getting better at the detail working on this scale.

I've been really enjoying creating these small pen drawings. I don't have the luxury of a studio at the moment but there is something really enchanting about making drawings in my bedroom. It takes me back to childhood when a piece of paper and any drawing material was enough. The drawings are small and fit so easy in the hand that a book of this scale could be really special and intimate.
I think I have a project on my hands...

Little girls that fiddle

If Im feeling a bit tired and just want to chill and watch TV, but still be slightly productive at the same time, I like to make pen drawings in my small sketch book and because I'm slightly sleepy the results can be quite surprising and strange.

Inverleith at VAS Annual show.

Delighted that one of my large scale drawings Inverleith, was part of this years VAS - Visual Arts Scotland - Transforming, Annual Exhibition. I was also pleased to see such a rich mixture of contemporary works made from traditional materials, including drawing, painting and tapestry.
Extra bonus that an image of Inverleith was also in the catalogue.

Pen and Ink workshop

A few weeks back I gave a Pen and Ink drawing workshop for Turriffc Arts, an Art Group based in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. There was a great turn out and the work that was produced was fantastic.

Creeping i-phone cover

I am very happy with my mobile phone cover, featuring one of my drawings, Hedera from 2008.
For a while I have wanted to design my own cover so with the help of Jessops, online store I did.
It is so easy and would highly recommend them.

The devil is in the detail

My last blog post was my two recent large drawings. Now I have a few small works to show.
I'm currently in the process of creating a A4 booklet of my small narrative works and limited edtion prints.
They are very much in tune with the larger pieces however I believe because of their scale and detail, they possess a more menacing, darker quality with stark interiors and waif like girls. I feel the work is more pure and intimate due to its scale.

Small stories

It's been a while since I last posted but I have been busy, creating large and small pieces.
I've also been creating a lot of images from my imagination, using no visual references. Working in this was allows me far more freedom and the images seem to have a more ethereal quality to them which is exactly what I am aiming for.

Ella, is a large drawing, roughly based on one of my images from the Seekers, 2013 series.
The female character is small, almost dwarf like with a fragile frame, possessing a menacing gaze.
I wanted to play with the idea that Ella is in a middle moment, leaving the interpretation up the viewer. Is she waiting or guarding the entrance to what lies beyond the door or is she ready for what ever comes out ?

Another recent large piece is Honeycomb. I began with a strong image of a woman looking out of a window with her eyes and upper head covered from a sheer white curtain. Slowly, the rest of the space grew and took form, like a honeycomb, becoming a rich ornate interior where my character prefers the comfort of staying in and looking out. The white curtain shields her eyes and the outside world becomes a blurred and softer place to view.

A drawback, drawing exhibition - Perennial Art

A drawback, is a group exhibition of drawings, curated by Perennial Art.

The exhibition consists of emerging and established contemporary artists, who consider drawing as an integral part of they creative process. They all love drawing.

I showed two new drawings. Annabel and Luna.

Recently I have been creating more imaginary drawings, producing one or more every week. I love them because they are fun to make and capture something within me, revealing my love of romanticism. Here are quite a few...
